It looks like your ST doesn't find a disk-drive. Then, it
behaves just like you described. If you wait some more,
the desktop may appear with absolutely no icons.
Try switching the ST on with absolutely no disk inserted
and while you wait for the ST to do anything, check
whether the disk is mechanically ok.
If the ST finally gets to a desktop as described above and
the disk is okay, your ST needs examining.
