From the behavior that you mentioned, where you were able to see the drive in HDX, started formatting it, but the format failed - it sounds as if the drive may be bad. If the controller or power supply was bad, I don't think that you would have gotten that far.
Therefore, replacing the mechanism may be the best choice. As far as I can tell, the Megafile 30 hard disk was a Seagate ST238R. This is in the same series as the ST250R (42mb) and ST277R (60mb). I know that the ST277R plugs right in (since put one in my Megafile) so I would imagine that the ST250R will be fine too.
If in doubt, keep your eyes open for a ST277R
From there, you will have to format the drive and install the hard disk driver onto it.
