Hi.
i'll try to make a little checklist for basic faultfinding

First of all, check all cables.

2 are they in the right ports ?
midi
in->out
out->in

3 are you recieving midi data when you press a key ? (right bottom indicators in cubase)

4 is your synth set up correctly to send and recieve midi ?

5 is cubase sending out data on the right channels ?

6 is cubase sending and receiving with the built in midi or maybe set to an external interface ?

7 maybe try another basic midi program to test midi interfaces.
