I have used the floppy holder to house a ZIP Drive, and more recently a Syquest 270
I have NOT used the Floppy cable, but instead I have used the Internal SCSI on the TT and IDE on the Falcon.
I see now reason why I couldnt use some solder work to creaye an internal SCSI Port on the Falcon either.
However, on saying this, the Ataris AFAICS really must have a Floppy Drive.
Nearly all software I have comes on floppies, and while its very rare that I actualyl need a floppy drive, I have found that when I do need one, Im crippled wihtout it.

As another option, have a look out for a floppy drive called an LS120
They were basically early super floppies and they fit to the Floppy cable on a PC and can act as Floppy or HD
Dont know how this will work on the Atari however, but might be worth a laugh if nothign else?
