funny that you say you have Mac experience and consider
the Atari ST awkward, because the Atari ST and Mac were
very similar for the time being.
Yes, to write a simple BASIC program, you need to start a
BASIC interpreter. Unlike the Commodore, the Atari ST
doesn't have a BASIC interpreter buit in that also works as a
command line user interface. However, there's quite a lot
of BASIC interpreters available, so you might probably
want to try GFA Basic, Omikron Basic, HiSoft Basic, STOS
or one of the less popular ones (such as ST Basic).
To use a SCSI drive, you would need a SCSI hostadapter.
They were quite common back then and you might be
lucky to find one on eBay.
Typical ones were, for example, from ICD or Hard & Soft.
