Hi Andrew,
thanks for your email-address. Without wanting to offend you, i would prefer to continue this discussion on this site, so others can (potentially) contribute, too.
Unfortunately, Atari TOS doesn't show its version when booting or in the "Desktop/Info" dialogue. The year, however, is sufficient: 1986 is TOS 1.00, 1987 is TOS 1.02. Both will not format disks conform to MS/DR/PC-DOS and both won't react to CTRL+ALT+Del.
To memorize settings, you can click "Save Desktop" or whatever it's called in english in the "Extras" menu. It will then write the current settings to disk in a file named "DESKTOP.INF". It should memorize resolution and other settings then, but only on the disk currently in the drive.
Also, in your other post, you wrote you're using a Commodore 64 compatible monitor on your ST. Yes, these have problems displaying 640 pixels a line. I thought you were using an Amiga monitor, which will do 640 pixels per line just fine.
And naturally, your comparison is correct: The C64 and the 800XL were the main competitors while the Atari ST competed with the Amiga and the Macintosh.
Probably, to read about a few basics, you might find the following site interesting:
http://www.atarimania.com/documents-atari-st-manuals_2_S.html
There, you'll find a PDF of the "official" Atari ST manual, explaining a few things around the desktop.
Good luck with everything and a good start into 2013,
The Paranoid / Paradox
