The reason it doesn't work on earlier versions of Hatari, is due to a DSP emulation bug in Hatari, which I found and was subsequently fixed in the emulator (at some point between 1.7 and 1.8).
BM was using a (completely valid) arithmetic instruction that didn't work in the old emulator.
This happens from time to time, when writing new code, running on emulators which have mostly been built to emulate pre-existing games, demos etc... sometimes they don't emulate obscure things they haven't seen before.
