I don't recall seeing a compiler for the 8-bit Basic, but I think there was some POKE that you can do to prevent LIST from working. After that POKE was set, the LIST command would give you an error instead of the listing. Of course, you have to run that POKE first, which is the problem.
That being at least 15 years ago, I don't remember the location to POKE since I never really used it.
