yes, desoldering is a pain but only really if you want to preserve the chips you're desoldering. my XE has two banks of these cheap MT4264 chips which seem to give XE owners a lot of problems. So I'm going to remove them all buy cutting the chip pins and bin them! desoldering the legs should be easy. then I'll soder on the sockets and replace put new 256k chips in.

I was going to desolder these nice Siemens 41256 chips from my old AtariST ram upgrade and use them, but I've realized just how difficult desoldering chips and keeping their pins is!! maybe i will just buy some new ones :P
