What were the problems with your broken Ataris? I've had 4 different Atari machines, and the only problem I ever had was a PSU that went bad on one of my Falcons, which I fairly easily replaced with a PC PSU. Otherwise, I haven't spent any money on a real Atari that I would consider a waste by any means.
That said, if you want a good computer without actually getting Atari or Atari clone hardware, one very inexpensive solution would be to pick up a cheap or second-hand PC, install Linux, and run Aranym. If you're more interested in just running games, there are a number of simple emulators out there for free that would run on the same cheap PC under Windows or Linux. You just need a TOS ROM image, which most emulator sites have links to. Might even be less expensive than a "DOS card" for yor Mac.
