Reading ST disks with Mandrake Linux created with Fast Copy Pro on the atari ST
If you want to read an write to stdisks with has different size as normal you must read this document for more about atari disks with strange sizes like 820 kbyte. Or create a .st file

Table of Contents

Introduction
Disk size
Preparing the disk on the st
Filesystem used by st
reading stdisk
writing stdisk
appendix

Introduction

This document is for people who have an atari st(e) with a double density floppy drive
and have a good copier program on the atari st.
have to tranfer disk from atari a pc with linux

Disk size.

If you format a disk with the gem desktop format facility the disksize becomes 720 kbytes
Fast Copy Pro is much faster and flexible it is even possible to reservate more than 900 kbytes
if your diskdrive allows 82 tracks and 11 sectors per track.
however my pc the maximum it can do is 10 sectors per.

on the linux computer you will find what sizes it supports.

fd0@ fd0u1440@ fd0u1722@ fd0u1840@ fd0u720@ fd0u830@
fd0u1040@ fd0u1600@ fd0u1743@ fd0u1920@ fd0u800@
fd0u1120@ fd0u1680@ fd0u1760@ fd0u360@ fd0u820@

figure 1: a dir listing of /dev

I am not sure what @ means but i think it means loopback device.
If you have a random acces device and the read head comes to the end it must loop back to
the beginning.

fd0@ means floppy disk 0
fd0u360@ means single sided double density
fd0u720@ means double sided double density
fd0u1440@ means double sided high density (same as fd0@)
to look on your own command line box
type: ls /dev fd0* this shows the above figure.

Fast Coppy pro does not work with this nice system. it works with
sectors and tracks. tracks are defined with a numer between zero and 81
so my drive in my st 0 .. 81 ( 82 - tracks),

fd0u720@ means double sided double density.
= sectors: 9 tracks 0 .. 79, sides:2

Preparing the disk on the st

We want to put the max. out of the hardware. So lets make disk suitable for fd0u830@
we need tape to cover the hole so the hd detection meganism knows we are dealing with dd
and not with hd. Stuped if you put a tape over the copy protection hole :-P

sectors: 10, tracks: 0 .. 81, sides:2
push the format button.

Filesystem used by st

linux mounts a device on a folder. Mount supports many different formats.
You can access that folder if it was on your permanent on your system.
but if you want to remove this disk frome the device you must unmount it.
mount needs to know what filesystem a stdisk in our device uses.

so you specify the -t option of mount msdos

Reading stdisk

on your own command line box
type:

su /* you must be root to mount a floppy, you will be prompted for passw */
mount /dev/fd0u830 -t msdos /mnt/floppy

you can acces now in /mnt/floppy
copy or remove all your stuff want to have on the diskt to the /mnt/floppy folder.

Writing stdisk

on your own command line box
type:

umount /mnt/floppy

if you have a emulator, and do not care about accessing st files from linux
you can also make an image. we must know how big it is is you can use the dir button in
fast copy pro on the ST. to see how big it was. then you choose which fd0u you going to use.

making st images from 720k

on your own command line box
type:

dd if=/dev/fd0u720 of=/image.st

if you want to use the stuff from the image on real st you must write am st image on st disk
you must prepare a blank disk on the st.
if you have for example download a coverdisk from st format magazine issue 44 from
the internet

filesize: 819200, filename: STF44.ST
choose fd0u820@
format with fcopy pro sectors: 10, tracks: 0 .. 80, sides:2

on your own command line box
type:

dd if=STF44.ST of=/dev/fd0u820 count=1 bs=820k

appendix

/dev/fd0u??? sides tracks(0 ..??) sectors
fd0u360 1 79 9
fd0u720 2 79 9
fd0u800 2 ?? ?? <-- find out yourself please?
fd0u820 2 80 10
fd0u830 2 81 10

su * root rulez!
mount /dev/fd0u720 -t msdos /mnt/floppy * mount floppy drive on floppy/
cp atarifile.zip /mnt/floppy * copy file to floppy/
umount /mnt/floppy

making st images
dd if=dev/fd0?? of= image.st * makes image
writing st images to disk
cd download/
dd if=floppy.st of=/dev/fd0u720 count=1 bs720k * makes disk
ls * list short (show dir)
ll * list long (show dir)
[tab] autocomplete

example: ST [tab] fills in ST44.ST if there a filename ST44ST exist in current directory
