Hi!
As you all know, Motorola hasn't bought Atari ;-)
But in spite of this there was some truth in the rumors about a new Milan computer.
You can read about it on the homepage of a trustworthy German Atari mail-order firm:
http://www.mucs.com/newnew/cbymucs.htm (in German)
Here is a summary:
A German distributor of office machines and computers will apparently take over the development of a greatly improved Milan. The anticipated release date of this "Milan 060 USB" is October. If Hasbro gives its permission, the machine may be labeled "Atari Milan", who knows...
These are the planned hardware specifications:
- Motorola 68060 at 50/66 MHz
- 2 USB-ports, 3 serial, 1 parallel, 4 PCI, 3 ISA,
- 6,4 GB hard disk, 32 MB SDRAM,
- ATI Rage PRO 4/8 MB (same as IMac)
- 40x EIDE cd rom
- special Atari keyboard (with PC connector)
- PS/2 Atari mouse (Logitech)
- Soundblaster 64 PnP Value
- loudspeakers
The following software will be included:
- MagiC Milan 6.x (fastest TOS-compatible operating system)
- NVDI 5.x (acceleration, vector fonts, printer driver, etc.)
- Jinnee 2.x (desktop with more features than the Mac's Finder)
- Draconis Pro (browser with JavaScript, email, ftp, telnet, news)
- Papyrus Home (word processor, light version)
- Tempus Word (extremly powerful word processor)
- Texel-Home (spreadsheet)
- development tools/programming languages: GNU C++, ACS-Pro GNU C++ version, OLGA, Bubble Gem, Objekt Gem, UDO with
UDO-Shell, Omikron Basic (new version) and Face Value
- COMA (fax software)
- GemSetup (Installer)
- some new games
The most sensational news is the price of all this together: 1600 DEM (about 900 $).
An equally equipped current Milan would cost more than twice as much.
Let's hope that this new machine will really come true!
Michael
