Hi, I've just recently gotten into Atari computing and I had a few questions.

I currently own an Atari 1040STf computer. 20megs ram, and two monitors, one monochrome and one color, the SC1224 color.

I recently purchased on eBay an Atari MEGA-4 ST. I thought I was buying a better computer, but turns out it's basically the exact same computer with more memory. I haven't received it yet, but I expect that it should come in in the next couple of days..

The questions I had were, is there anything about the MEGA-4 ST thats better than the Atari 1040, other than the fact that the MEGA has a detachable keyboard, and 3 more megs of memory?

Is the processor any bit faster? Are the nanoseconds on the memory chips quicker than those in the 1040? Does the MEGA-4 run any better than the 1040?

The TOS on my 1040 is only 1.0, it's also apparently DOS compatible, which I find to be a VERY VERY neat feature. Is this a special feature? Or are all Atari 16+ bit computers DOS compatible. What I mean by this is... can they all read DOS disks?

What can I do to increase the definition of the desktop. The desktop I have no on my 1040 is pretty lame. I can't seem to change the colors of the desktop, and the icons are HUGE! Is it possible to get GOOD resolution with a color monitor on the MEGA-4?

What about speed.. is there anything I can buy or replace on the MEGA-4 that would make it quicker? How about if I replaced the RAM chips on the motherboard with faster equivelant sized ram chips? Will this work?

I just want to make it a bit more modern looking on the desktop is all.

BTW, it came with a 60mb hard drive and something called Notator Logic too which I have no idea about. I think it's for MIDI or something, but I have a Roland SCC-1 midi card in my IBM already.

Anyway, the computer looks really really cool.. and I know im going to have TONS of fun playing those old games on it.

How much better is an Atari STe?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions...
