Hi Atarians,

As Tinman said in another thread, evolving to actual PC components such as
Athlon or Pentium4 processors, associated chipsets and so on.. could be a
solution.

I think Tinman is right when he says that a 180 MHz CPU looks very slow today.
Let's face the reality : in 1997, I had a Pentium 200 PC and was a fast machine.
With one of my friends who had a Hades060, we compared their respective
speeds by doing a few tests (calculating the same POV script with the same
settings for example) : the P200 was only a little bit faster than the Hades, which
was running a 68060 CPU at 133 MHz (some say that it's only 120, or even 60
MHe, I don't know who should I believe?). But it looked good, I was impressed by
the Hades.

Now I have an brand new Athlon TB 750 MHz. I'm really far from the Hades new
(sorry, it hurts, for it's good for your health). Am I disappointed by the future
machines like the "Coldfire Atari"? Well, I'm interested but not very happy : I'm
sure that it could be a great computer, but in terms of performances, far from my
Athlon (don't say I'm using Windows which slows down the machine: even if
it's true, I can't see it).

I'd like to dream again : remember what the ST represented for us, looking back
to 1985's Amstrad or Spectrums... And then the Falcon : a great hope, but I was
disappointed by the delay (I thought it was a vapor-hard-ware at a time). Two years before and it would have been a very cool machine (it's only a cool machine
for its owners). So why not going further and decide that the next "Atari" will be
the BEST machine available? Like in 1985...

I'm really interested by your opinion (please be polite) and sorry for any
"bugs" in my english, I'm French.. ;-)

Thanks,
LST
