On the Falcon, getting a hard drive to run has not been a straightforward business! There was a drive included with the 030 which would not work for me. Too bad, as I was hoping there'd be cool software on it! Anyway, the Falcon crashes if I try to boot from it.
So I found an old IBM 1.3 GB drive from an old powerbook which I decided to use. I downloaded AHDI and the HDDriver demo to try to configure with. First, HDDriver will neither partition nor format the IDE drive, because the feature is not included for the demo version. The AHDI folder contained one useful disk preparation tool called HDX... it told me that there were vague reasons why it could not do either task.
So I got an external case, a 2.5" -to-3.5" IDE cable, and started trying spare 1 GB drives. These are FAT format from windoze boxes, and HDX had an easier time. The partition utility told me, after several hours, that it could not partition because I needed to reformat. So I reformatted, which took a while. Then it tried automatically to partition afterwards, and kept grinding away overnight. I finally switched the Falcon off, restarted, and tried to partition the newly formatted drive. An error appeared saying that HDX could not access the root of the drive- I'd need to reformat it and try again.
This could be a grueling trial-and-error process. Is it supposed to take days to prepare a 1 GB hard drive? Are certain drives more or less likely to work? I'd love a step-by-step description of how this is usually done. I heard that one only needs to tell the util to partition, and it's done- then why has this not worked on several drives which I have tried. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
