To Havoc. :)

If different companies come up with the same computer with a different brand name they will all make advetisements for the system. If only one company makes them only one company will advertise them. (They NEED alot of advertisment bucks to make it work!)
For instance in 3DFX would have only produced their own Voodoo based graphic cards they would have never been such a big hit. They wouldn`t have had Diamond, Creative, Realvison, etc, etc doing advertisements.

Commodore thoght they would make easy money with making IBM clones because they are easy to make and you only have to put your own brand name on them. They stopped producing them after made some billions loss. They did concentrate on their Amigas but they had no cash left to make a new Wonderfull machine and do a decent marketing compain. The still made money with the Amigas but it wasn`t enough by far to pay their debts.
And many companies were interested in the Amiga but the highest bidding ones were only planning to buy it to be sure that it will stay dead. After the Escom fiasco I think Gateway 2000 is a suitable company to own the Amiga technology.

You can check out QNX at www.qnx.com. It also has demo for x86 based machines that will show of the compactness of the OS. It has a the kernel, GUI, Full-Java Browser and some other cool stuff all on only one high density disk. Note that Amiga will only use the Neutrino Kernel they will add their onw GUI and "revolutionary" stuff.
Linux is a cool free open source OS available for many different processors (like QNX) including 68k, x86 and PPC.
Yes there are many companies making software for the new machine but the "real" development systems will be available in september or something. So now the companies mainly program C++ written applications for PPC based Amigas that they will ported to the Development System when it is released.

Well almost only the professional and more advanced Amiga users still use Amigas. The difference with other communities it is far better organised. The community made things like AWD (http://www.cucug.org/amiga.html) possible. There is nothing similar like Aminet for other platforms. And people are doing alot of work for the system without making money from it. For most tasks you can get a free program from Aminet that can do that task for you while on other platforms these programs costs alot of $.

Well almost nobody know about "Transmeta" and it has been in development for several years. But remember this name as it is going to change the computing industry! (Watch out Intel!)
The technology used by Amiga will be finished this year. You can`t hurry these 3rd party companies as they want to make the best technology there is. Meanwhile it is better to just concentrate on the technology that you do have power over like the OS.
Believe me these machines are for real and I have heard some pretty interesting stuff that I can`t share with you as this would not be appropriate. If you are interested you should check the Amiga website (www.amiga.com) as they will release the info when the time is right. (They will do some major announcements this month!)
Sincerely, Mike Bouma.
