A couple of days ago while out walking I found a 520stfm sitting on top of an empty PC and monitor box waiting for the bin men to collect.

Anyway, I took the machine home, plugged it and... Zilch, dead as a dodo. No LED's on the keyboard or other signs of life except for a knocking sound coming from within the case.

I've had the lid off and checked the power supply. When on open circuit (power connector disconnected from the mainboard) I get a steady 5v from the red cable and about 11v from the blue with no knocking sound. When I reconnect the power connector the measured voltages at the connector drop to about 0.3v and the transformer starts to knock.

I guess that there is a short somewhere, but where to begin?
I've disconnected the floppy and keyboard but the knocking from the transformer still persists so I assume that the problem is on the mainboard. Any advice would be much appreciated.
TIA
