It's been years, but I remember the following bits from the dim corners of my mind.
1. There was a hardware fix. I don't remember what or how. Posibly just switching the DMA chip and TOS chips?
2. I seem to remember an auto folder patch program.
To be honest though this is all something I haven't thought about in a decade.

Some STE had a factory bug: the hard disk controler did not work as specified, and SCSI drives were unreliable. My first STE was one such: the SCSI HD was recognized, but I could not write or format or partition; I could only read files on it, but not all files, and not always. There was nothing to be done, I bought another STE.
