I doubt you formatted it as wrong type.
HDX should allow you to partition it the right way and it might be necessary to "initialize" the boot sector - at least i stumbled over that once or twice.
Additional formatting should not be needed.
Then simply install AHDI to the boot-partition and it should be working again.
If all that doesn't work, you might have been unlucky and the drive died in the meantime.
Personally, i consider this to be likely since drives are identified via their hardware response and not via their boot-sector driver and if a drive is not even identified by the harddisk-tools you mentioned, it's usually not partition type or filesystem that is faulty but the drive itself.
