The problem you may have is the up position on your joystick pad may be worn out. You can attempt to fix the problem by lifting up the up position on the pad a little bit until the plastic stick touched the pad. Then try using the joystick then. All atari controllers are only 8 wire even though it has 9 pins on the adapter end.
