I've been using an unregulated PSU for testing some bare 2600 systems I have lying around. I've been able to run the systems at 6V but this is not recommended.
In fact, an unregulated PSU is not recommended for long-term use as actual output voltage could be much higher. So try spending a little more on a regulated supply.
