I believe that the Cattamaran simply changed the multiplyer. From memory, the Cattamaran was enabled or disabled buy writing to an address in memory.
The software they gave you allowed it to simple be turned ON or OFF. They also gave you some ASM code so you could make your own programs to check that it is there, turn it on, off, etc.
However, it was not a simple case of ON or OFF, it would appear that you actually put the multiply value in there.
All of the upgrades could actually run it at 16, 32 or 48. Some of the later version allowed you to have 64, 72 and 96, this sounds strange but I do remember it being something really bazar like this.
They never released assembled code to do this (as it is unstable), but I guess that replacing the CPU with a different type of package then it would be possible to do it (maybe with cooling too).
I never managed to get mine over 48, but I think this is because it is not the right version.
