I'd start again.
Make up a Boot Floppy!
Check your boot settings with NVram, (be careful though as unless you're familiar with what your doing you may get lost)Possibly sounds as if you've got memory check on? but with out the visuals.
The 'control' function only works after the initialization.
Could be a corrupt Newdesk.inf
Do some maintenance, get a copy of Diamond egde. Clear up your auto folder, running something like superboot to create a good setup may be a good idea?
failing that make it a stong coffee, knit a scarf and tuck it up in bed, it doesn't sound well.
