You can allways try booting with the <control> key pressed, to boot clean, with harddisk driver, but without executing any programs in the auto folder.
(and then execute the demo)
One other idea.. are you running this on a VGA monitor ?
It might be that the demo in question does not support VGA video modes, but switches to a low horizontal frequency (15 kHz) that is not supported by your monitor.
That will cause the 'wrap-around' effect as well.
