Non Volatile Ram,
The chip contains "flags" for the system setup.
eg. all the lights are on in your house, you have a power cut, all the lights go off, but all switches are on.
The house is the computer, the power cut is the on/off switch for the computer.
To Reset NVRAM from the keyboard shortcut press Control+Undo on startup.
Also try simple things, like trying a different monitor.
