Well, slaughtering a really old PC might help and also you might find Megafiles, SH204/205 or Vortex HDPlus with defective controllers but intact drive.

Otherwise i can only think of getting a decent SCSI-hostadapter (ICD or Link'96) and getting a reliable SCSI disk.

Expensive, i know, but will usually cure all your storage problems once and for all. :-)
