Well in my opinion the Atari keeps getting better as time goes on because of the people that built the hardware for themselves and programmed for themselves, which (in a way a blessing) was forced upon the Atarians due to the failed hardware/software support.
What this in effect did was to put alot of the Atarians in control of thier computers where the owners of the C64's or Apple II's didn't have to go there.
Also as a direct result of this alot of the Atari Power users went on to program or help to build the more current systems and are (now more than likely either retired or about to retire) and are getting back to the more simplified times.
