It depends on the type of mouse!
I have come across 3 types of dedicated mouse mats. I did have the chance to try them on each others mat. Unfortunetly, they only worked on the relative mat:(
I use optical mice on the machines i can, due to a injury it's hard to use a standard one.
It would be nice to be able to use a modern mouse on the Atari's. I like the m$ intellimouse as you dont need a mat at all. The only surface i have found it not to work was the hospital bed tray things. works brilliantly on my trouser leg:)
