My optical mouse works on most mouse mats.
Just make sure that its not red, or orange, as it wont reflect back very good, and it will then go crazy like you say.
Mine did when I first got it, because my mouse mat had a lot of red and orange on it, got a cheapy blue one and its 100% fine now.
