If the HD Utilities disk doesn't find the drive, then you are a bit stuck. At the very first part of booting, the utility software should report its existence -- are you certain that it isn't finding anything at SCSI 0? If so, that means your HD controller (a solid state device) failed. This isn't impossible, but most drives fail somewhere within their moving parts.
