At the moment I am going to try another tack. I have removed the hard drive and am going to fit a scsi card to an old pc and I can the see if the pc will recognise the drive. If it doesn't then the hard drive is probably buggered. If it does recognise the drive then it is probably the hard disk controller that is buggered. Will report what happens when i've tried it unless someone thinks that this is not a good idea.
