It's normal for an STE to pause during boot, typically your STE will try 3 times to read a boot sector, then wait 8 seconds (hard disc spin-up delay), then try and load the Auto folder for a bit, then ACC files in the root of the disk.
Are you booting with or without a disk in the drive?
Try holding Alt just after you turn the machine on, see if makes a difference. (usually tells the machine to go straight to desktop - and then you can try opening the drive from there)
