I have also had this problem reading ST disks on my PC. My STE has been fitted with a 1.44 Mb floppy drive and high density disks usually read OK on the PC but 720 Kb ones sometimes cause trouble. I got round it by formatting the 720 Kb disks on the PC before copying the Atari files onto them. I found that both STE and PC could read them. I dont know if MAC format disks can be used in an ST.
