If you want to use the YM-chip as synth, there's no good option for midi controlling and using more advanced YM-routines. Quite a shame, as it's becoming a bit popular to use old computer synths in music (square waves are nice ! :) )
If you can think about just using the Atari YM-synth and sample the output rather than midicontrolling it, have a look at my Atari ST soundchip tracker page: http://www.dhs.nu/files_msx.php
However, if you were thinking of letting the ST perform realtime high quality software synthetis, I think you have come to a dead end. There's really not enough power in the poor old thing to do it. A Falcon is recomended and the ACE synthesizer (http://nb.atari.org) which is quite phenomenal.
Then there's sample-synthesizers, there is one that works on STe/TT/Falcon, which can play 8channel 8bit sampled audio directly from inside Cubase. It's called E.P.S.S. and can be found at http://www.dhs.nu/files_msx_digi.php
