Seems to be a timing problem?

If you use some older LS logics (74LSxx)
then try with some faster chips. (74Fxx, 74HCTxx)

Also, a ST doesn't have the most powerful PSU on earth, so If you feed the HD with power from the internal PSU, voltage may drop. That can cause such kinda things...

Older HD's requires more power than modern ones, and a 2.5" doesn't need 12v, meaning it takes even more current from the 5v line. I'd give the HD its own PSU, and also make sure the power is properly filtered..
