Hi Paul. First, I must say, good on you, taking care of an old ST! Here in sweden many people throws fully functioning STEs and other models ON THE CITY DUMP!! Such behavior makes me puke... But most people donīt seem to know better. :( Now, unfortunately, thereīs no other way to reach the PCB, than to remove everything. But, once youīve got rit of all those metal shields, thereīs no point, puting them back there... Melt them down, or something. ;)
Iīve done service to about 150-200 ST(E)s over the years, and Iīve only seen 4-5 machines with all that metal junk still there! (Those mashines hadnīt been opened unthil I did it...) now, without them, itīs a easy matter to put the computer back together, again. The power supply only has 2 screws, and the diskdrive has 3. And if you want to do some modifications to your ST in the future (you probably will, just wait ītil our hardwareing site is up ;) ) then you will be glad all that junk is out of your way.
Now, I think about 90% of all cases of faulty STs, depends on a faulty diskdrive, and if thatīs the case, I can tell itīs no meaning to try to repair the old drive. Just replace it. If your computer is an STE, itīs quite easy to give it an 1.44 mb drive, but it will take a liīl hardware modification, though. Donīt let that scare you off, we will show you what to do, on that site.
Finding an original ATARI diskdrive isnīt easy today, but one can use a standard "Shugart compatible" 720 kb drive, from some trashed 286, or so. It will require buffering of a few of the lines on the shugart bus, but thatīs easy done. (the site, again)
This turned out to look like some commersial spot for our upcoming site, think Iīd better get on with it, so we can throw it out in cyberspace soon....
c u there.
