The metal shielding does perform a function, I stops some, not all, interference to other electrical devices (TV's, radio etc.) in and around the house. With the shielding on it also stops some dust getting onto the motherboard and any accidental spilling of liquids etc...
With the shielding on my ST's interfere LESS than my PC's do with my TV etc.
Saying that, the computer will work fine without it.
I saw a video on MTV a while ago. Where a group was shown using a Falcon! There wasn't anything wrong with that, you think.... At the end of the video they smashed it ALL up arggggh! sackralidge (bugger, can't remember how to spekk it!).
