Yes, they did do the IDE thing.
I think TUS, System Solutions and perhaps Mario becroft have all done one, and as far as I am aware, its the cheapest option for getting your ST together with a HD? Might be wrong, btu from what I gather thats it.
Yes, I can see that a HD and of course RAM have made massive boosts for me too!
My first RAM upgrade was done with the ST Format SOUP-UP campaign if many of you remember that one? - I send the 520STE off to COMPO to get it up to 1MB and it went missing for several months and I got the wrong one back ( Not working! ) and after several more months I finally took compo to court... I ended up with a 4MB STE for my troubles!
Somehow I cannot imagine myself ever using any less than 4MB anymore!
My first HD cost me £699 and I also remember that before it even came through the post, the very same HD was down to £299 which really got my back up.
Software-wise, I have to agree on LetEmFly too! - Before I found MagicOS, that was very much a definite in the auto folder for me.
As was LEDPanel ( still in use ) and the BOXKITE FileSelector, and before that was Selectric.
