For me, it would be:
Hardware: (I started with a MegaST4 so no RAM upgrade needed :) )
1. Monochrome monitor. I started with a color monitor and thought that was all I needed. Text looked fine. Then, I saw SM124s at a great price and bought one. I never went back to color again! (except games) Those 200 extra vertical pixels really make the text look better and easier to read.
2. Syquest 44MB removable hard drive. This was my first hard drive too. It was great because I had one cartridge for mono and one for color. Then I had another for Spectre GCR stuff. No boot selector needed. :) A bit expensive, but worth it for the convenience and unlimited storage.
3. The Music Studio (by Activision). This introduced me to the world of MIDI. It was fun watching the colorful notes scroll by as it played through the ST speaker, and later through my synthsizers. I wasn't a great keyboard player, so the note-by-note entry was great for me.
4. Notator (by C-Lab). After a while, I wanted to print scores and manipulate MIDI data more than what Music Studio offered. I knew about Notator, but it was too expensive. I eventually found a used copy at a decent price. It's never been the same. :) Not only was the program awesome, but the nice vinyl cover, cool cover artwork and slick pages really made it stand out too.
Anyway, those are my favorite things.
