I remember reading that as well - May 1995 issue of ST Format IIRC. The thing was - the company they said was doing it was 'Profolial enterprises'. The article reported that they were using STFMs inside a satellite. Profolial is a neat anagram of 'april fool' and the story ran in the month of april.
I'm not saying that STs aren't used in satellite control applications, just that the one time I heard about it, it was a hoax.
Atari STs were used in Business Card Printing machines in the early - mid nineties - I've seen inside one. Basically an STFM board and a laserjet printer, mono screen and waterproof bubble-pop keyboard.
