I do not know how 3.0r1 behaves.

What was your CD? Mine was IDE, it was detected without any problems.

I've never seen Debian installer unable to mount CD yet. What does it do? Does it ask you to specify CD device? If you have IDE CD, valid devices may be:

/dev/hda
/dev/hdb

If you have SCSI valid devices may be:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdc
/dev/sdd
/dev/sde
/dev/sdf
/dev/sdg

(depends on your settings)
