Hello fellow Linux user !
You're lucky because after years of great silence, the Atari emulation is living again on Linux. It's changing fast now, very fast.
Here's my experience with ST or better emulators:
- XSTeem 2.2: the best for games. Very good handling of the mouse, very good GUI (Graphic User Interface), configurable joysticks emulation using keyboard.
- WinSTon 0.5 on Wine: usable, but you can't use floppy images. It is obsoleted by Stew 1.0, which is an evolution based on Winston's sources.
- STew 1.0 on Wine: usable, though without floppy images. Your games will have to be on a hard disk image. That used to be the next best after XSteem, but not any more: see below.
- Hatari 0.20: A new emulator for Linux, also based on Winston's sources. 2nd best after XSteem. Good for some games. It's still evolving. Wait'n'see.
- WinSTon 0.6: to be released hopefully very soon. It's a merge of Winston 0.5 and Stew 1.0, by the authors of those. Great emulator expected there, with the logical consequence of a new codebase for Hatari. Wait'n'see.
- Gemulator on Wine: usable, useless. See STonX and ARAnyM.
- STonX: once the only ST emulator for Linux, this one almost died, before activity suddenly came again. This emulator's aim is not to reproduce an ST, but rather to enhance on the ST. It works the same, but you can have any resolution you want (850x670 if you want), always in 16 colors (except monochrome mode). It tries to improve the use of "serious" applications, but if it's games you want, choose another.
- ARAnyM: a Falcon-like for Linux. Impressive. It is not intended for games, though, because there's no sound, yet. This one is very actively developed, and already working very good. If you want 800x600 TrueColor with Mint multitasking, use Aranym.
All in all, we have a lot of choice. My favourites are:
-XSTeem for games,
-ARAnyM for everything else.
Yves.
