Hi Phil,
no, you're completely right; the survey showed exactly this; there were questions like "Are you willing to spend money for good, new software for the Atari?" and there were mainly two groups who denied this: pure ST-users and pure emulators.
I have now digged for the result-file and here it is:
Mostly used Atari (in autumn 2001):
Atari with 68000 (ST, STE, Mega ST(E): 13.4%
Atari with 68020/030 (TT, Falcon, ST with PAK): 46.1%
Atari with 68040/060 (Milan, Hades, T40): 26.9%
Emulation: 13.4%
With the CT60 the niveau is IMHO getting even higher.
How much RAM do the Ataris have today?
less than 4 MB: 2.9%
4-7 MB: 17.3%
8-16 MB: 25.9%
more than 16 MB: 52.8%
So, if you have a 14-MB Falcon, you're not quite up to date ;)
This was the most surprising thing the survey revealed.
Of course it was much easier to reach "active" atari-users for the survey; but what role could be played by "atarians" who just have an ST somewhere in their cupboard, especially for a new game?
(I would rather try to get those people to buying a TT or Falcon instead of still supporting ST's, and don't misunderstand me: I love the ST, it's the origin of our platform - but simply outdated even for us).
I will relaunch the files on my own webspace (www.alexander-feige.de) in the next days.
Coming back to Elite 3; I even think Elite II was totally unplayable on the ST already. I have always played it on the Falcon were it had a good speed even without taking advantage of the DSP in any way.
