I'm certain that my NEC (a Japanese model, probably around two years old) has controls in all directions.
Couldn't you edit your Videlity modes so as to fit your monitor better?
On another point, most smaller LCD monitors have an ideal resolution of 1024x768 (I suppose that real old models would prefer smaller resolutions). While CRT screens also have a kind of ideal resolution, they're much more forgiving than LCD screens, which have their mind really well set on exactly how big a pixel is, and where it should be. Consequently, deviating resolutions will look rather bad, as though it has been antialised (I suppose that this is what the controller inside the monitor might actually do). If you switch resolutions a lot, and are picky with pixel sharpness, then an LCD monitor might not be your best choice, despite the other ergonomics, since a flat screen will usually only work well in the resolution with which it has been built in mind.
