FDIs were actually manufactured by SoundPool (but designed by Friendchip, if I remember right, look on the PCB for clues - all a bit confusing!), and the green, SoundPool ones were functionally superior to the older red Steinberg ones by having an extra sample rate (48 KHz).
The S/PDIF protocol does allow for 24-bit audio data but I don't have a suitable source to test it. My PC has a 24-bit audio card but I can't see any way to force 24-bit on the S/PDIF output (I can take the sample rate to 96 KHz but then the FDI definitely can't handle that because it has to slave to it).
I would guess it means if you feed it a 24-bit signal it will accept it and simply drop the extraneous 8 bits, as I've not seen any released Falcon audio applications that support it, certainly not from the "big boy" publishers like Steinberg. Apex Audio was supposed to support 24-bit audio, internally that's easy of course, I don't know how it would have dealt with external sources, not that it matters because it went the same way as Apex Alpha, dying a silent death...
Incidentally I'm currently in the process of making digital recordings of the recent ACE Tracker competition entries (well done Thomas for supporting the FDI!), hence Falcon and PC already connected digitally, then I'll burn an audio CD, jump in my car and go cruising!
