Have you tried the old 9" drop technique? :) If the disk drive is external, then this indeed poses no risk to your ST. You just lift up one side of the ST about 20cm of the desk, and drop it. If you don't like the sound of that, you can open up the ST and give every IC a light tap with the back of screw driver, just to push them in and "shake things up" a bit.

And I see you are here in Melbourne? (s19.nas06-mel.sub.net.au) You can take it to the monthly MACE (Melbourne Atari Computer Enthusiasts) meetings for some advice. They meet at 10am on the 3rd Sunday of every month at 27 Dorcas St, South Melbourne. I haven't been yet... I turned up at about 1pm the other week and there was no one there :-)
