I do not know "grind" verb, I am french an my english is not so good, but if you meen that you could hear a big noise comming from your drive, it seems to me that you get over than 80 tracks per side. I would have say over 82 tracks per side. Original double density ATARI floppy drives could deal with higher format than common PC drives. It is a matter of physical ability for the read/write heads movements. You lead the heads more closer to the center of the floppy disk as you increase the number of tracks. Some drives could reach the 82th track with no problems but others stop at the 80th one because the head is phisicaly stopped. The head bump into something and make a noise. As the system try several times before reporting an error, you hear severals bumps. You have to know that the "legal" number of tracks on a floppy is 80 per side for a 720Ko double density. I don't know for HD floppies. So try to format your floppy with the original 720Ko ATARI drive... It is true that some demos and games use more than 80 tracks...
