Is the Atari desk displayed ?
If nothing else than a blank screen is displayed and you have a floppy inserted into the A drive, you have a problem I do not know.
If you didn't insert a floppy disk before switching on the STE, everything is normal. You have to wait at least one minute before the desk to appear without a floppy (even a blank floppy will fit). Have a look to some others thread in this forum to read all explanations.
If the desk is displayed but not the A and B icons, it should be not a hardware problem. As the desk is displayed on screen, we could suppose TOS and GEM being loaded. Try to install a floppy icon to the desk with the desk menu and if A and B drives appear then save your desktop configuration. If this works that would mean your newdesk.inf file or system.inf file (I am not sure of those file names, but those names should be similar) was (were) "corrupted" and have no informations about A and B icon driver to place on desk.
Have you got the trash icon displayed ?
