Did you already try to clean your floppy disk read/write heads ? White "mud" could settle there some time to time, so the floppy inserted is not readable (nor writable).
Maybe simply check your drive with antoher computer. If the drive is clean and works well while mounting in an other machine, I would check the cable between the drive and the STE motherboard with a multimeter. Cables could break inside when they are folded "tight".
