I've had a 1040 lose half of its memory as well. I was about 11 at the time, and utterly devastated :-) Because of my age, I don't know what the technical issue was either...
It happens to upgraded 520s too, apparently. I think it has something to do with the MMU, though I'm not sure. Someone else may know how to fix it....
